THERE ARE different ways of getting into showbiz. Modelling, beauty pageants, talent contests - there are as many ways as there are aspirants.

One road to fame and fortune that has become quite popular in local showbiz is the road that people like Wowie de Guzman, Spencer Reyes, Dingdong Dantes, Danilo Barrios, the brothers Rayver and Rodjun Cruz, Archie Alemania and Vhong Navarro have taken.

The one thing that the actors mentioned above have in common is that all of them started their showbiz careers as dancers. Some of them were members of popular all-male groups like the Streetboys and Anime. Now comes another young talent, a former dancer seeking to make a name for himself as an actor.

Like Wowie, Spencer, Dingdong and company, Star Magic talent Tim Espinosa got his start as a dancer; specifically as a member of the all-male dance group known as the Freemales, which used to dance back-up on shows like ASAP and Homeboy, Boy Abunda's former daytime talk show. Tim was part of the group for two years before he decided to strike out on his own.
He recalls how it happened: "We danced back-up for Angelica Panganiban at a mall show. After our number, a talent coordinator came up to me and asked if I wanted to do a VTR - I did, and, well, here I am."

Tim quit the group in June 2007; according to him, it wasn't much of a problem telling the others that he was leaving the group to go solo. "They understood," is all that Tim will say. However, he adds that as far as he knows, they auditioned other dancers to take his place after he left.Tim, who was born and raised in the United States (his parents migrated to the US in the 1970s), started as a dancer. Believe it or not, he was actually a folk dancer.
